Mission Statement
Our mission is to help those in need through a volunteer effort of planting, picking, and delivering fresh produce, via a unique model that: heightens awareness of socio-economic issues, highlights the importance of local farms, and inspires volunteers across many generations and skill sets.
In the U.S., 13.5 million households (11.9% of all U.S. households) are food insecure, cutting back on needed food requirements due to a lack of adequate income. Over 47% of all food-insecure households have incomes above 130% of poverty, which in most cases would make these households ineligible for food stamps. - Center on Hunger and Poverty Bulletin, Brandeis University, October 2005
Research suggests that, on average, families need an income of about twice the federal poverty level to meet their most basic needs. Children living in families with incomes below this level-$40,000 for a family of 4 in 2006-are referred to as low-income. In New Jersey, 25% of children (530,300) live in low-income families. - National Center for Children in Poverty, Columbia University, 2006
