How Can You Help?

Eating well keeps us healthy, helps us concentrate, helps us save money on healthcare, helps farmers make a living, protects our environment, and so much more.  We need healthy ecosystems so that animals, plants, and humans can breathe clean air and be healthy! But sometimes it can be expensive, and so many people who have jobs or homes still struggle to afford eating well.

What can you do to help? Some of those numbers are very large above.  But when everyone tries to do a little bit, big things can happen!  Here are some suggestions of things you can talk with your family about trying at home:

  1. Volunteer at an organization like America’s Grow-a-row, Soup Kitchens, Food Banks or Food Pantries.  See where we deliver around the state of NJ.
  2. Have a healthy snack like fruit, nuts, carrots, celery, peanut butter, yogurt, smoothies, dried fruit or popcorn. You’ll have more energy for homework, playing outside, or hanging out with friends and family.
  3. Vote with your dollar! When you buy something, that tells a company you like it and to keep making it.  Think about what you are spending it on, and the message it communicates.
  4. Compost! Reduce the amount of garbage that winds up in landfills by recycling your food scraps.  Use the extra dirt in your familiy’s garden or yard and breathe in the fresh air!
  5. After eating a meal with your family, have everyone throw their food scraps into a bucket and weigh it.  If there is a lot of waste, try the next night to only take what you will eat.
  6. Wait 15 minutes to make sure you are full before getting up for more.  When the French are hungry they say, “I have hunger,” and when they are full they say, “I have no more hunger.”  This helps us to pay attention to those who cannot often say they have no more hunger.*
